Satao Camp takes you back to the classical Out of Africa safari with green canvas tents, bush style showers and personal and friendly service; evoking a feeling of the true ‘Old African’ experience. Our location is indisputably unique; nestled beneath the shade of the old Tamarind trees, just in front of a very favored waterhole, our guests are ensured breathtaking view to the many elephants coming daily for a drink and a refreshing wash.
Satao Camp consists of 20 classical canvas tents, dining room, reception, gift shop and an observation tower overlooking our waterhole. We have 4 luxury suites for honeymooners or guests who feel for a little extra luxury, 6 family tents and 10 standard tents. 1 tent has been carefully constructed to accommodate guests with physically challenges.
The tents are all en-suite with unique African furniture, comfortable beds, electricity and a spacious bathroom with hand wash basins, flush toilets and bush style showers. Every evening or on request our staff will bring you hot water for the most wonderful safari shower experience. The luxury tents have solar heated showers.
All tents are carefully positioned and have a private verandah from which one can enjoy the scenery and the many elephants that comes to drink, wash and groom each other during the day and the night.
The dining room overlooks the Satao Oasis and our chefs prepare a delicious selection of international cuisine to satisfy every taste bud that visits us, vegetarian dishes are always on offer. Breakfasts and lunches are easily enjoyed under the shade of our 200 years old Tamarind tree, whereas dinners are served in our cozy and rustic dining room.
After dinner, relax around the glow of the campfire, watch the stars and the atmosphere of Tsavo and swap stories of the day’ adventures. Comfort and personal attention in the beautiful African bush ensures your stay with us is one that you will never forget.
Satao Camp – Location
Satao Camp is located in the heart of the Tsavo East National Park. The Camp is unfenced, allowing the wild animals to move freely. We are often visited by lions, cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes and buffalos.
Over one hundred impalas and waterbucks graze just outside our tents and a family of genet cats has made our camp their home.
At Satao you will truly feel at one with the beautiful African nature.
Few places can offer the feeling of ‘Old Africa’ in quite the same way as the Tsavo East National Park.
The Ecosystem is accredited as one of the world’s leading biodiversity strongholds; with bushy grassland, open plains and semi-arid acacia scrub and woodlands.
Photographers are highly recommending the area for its fabulous light and panorama views.
The Mudanda Rock and Yatta Plateau offers the world’s largest lava flow and the Lugards Falls on the Galana River has very impressive water shaped rocks.
Satao Camp – Activities
Satao Camp offers morning and afternoon game drives within the Great Tsavo East National Park with endless areas to explore. We recommend you to go for a game drive around the Voi River and Aruba Dam, but for the more adventurous safari guests, one can also choose to stay in the lesser visited areas adjacent to our camp and experience a more exclusive game drive with less vehicles and a greater chance to encounter the Tsavo lions all be yourselves.
All of our guides are Professional Safari Guides and has worked for many years in Tsavo. Their passion and knowledge about the environment and rich biodiversity of Tsavo are unequalled and ensures our guests the best game viewing and understanding of the amazing wild animal and birdlife that inhabits the area.
All our safari vehicles are open 4×4 and equipped with everything you need to have most perfect game drive with binoculars, books about African birds and mammals and a cooler box with chilled drinks comfortably at hand.
Staying out in the bush in front of a campfire with a dawa cocktail or a glass of champagne in your hand, while the sun slowly drops over the horizon of the Sagala Hills is truly an unforgettable and revealing safari experience. Listening to the sounds of the bush with a feeling of the old Africa is cleansing for the mind and the soul and an experience you will never forget.
The Satao Camp oasis is a very favored habitat for a great variety of birds. Over 300 different species of birds have been identified. Birders, and interested can walk around the premises of our camp and watch the many birds coming to nest or take a bath at the waterhole. Hornbills, barbits, starlings, guinea fowls, pearl spotted owls are very common to see.
Daphne Sheldrick Orphanage in Voi
We arrange trips to the Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage in Voi. Guests who would like to visit and support the little orphanage elephant calves and their rehabilitation back to the wild are kindly requested to contact the Satao Camp in advance for arrangement. Elephants can also be adopted in advance by visiting www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org
Satao Camp – Eco Aspects
Satao Camp finds it is crucial to protect the wildlife, develop eco tourism sound practices and support the local communities in order for tourism to benefit the environment and the local people in a long term perspective.
The Camp has been carefully constructed using only local materials that have a minimal impact on the environment. Solar panel is being utilized whenever possible.
We separate our waste and all non-organic waste is being transported out of the park for proper disposal, to ensure a clean and safe environment in Tsavo East.
We work very closely with the Kenya Wildlife Service to make sure our own driver guides as well as our visitors driving private cars stays on the stipulated park roads and abide the park regulations set by KWS.
We have more than 12 years experience and achieved invaluable knowledge about the wildlife, their habits and their movements within the park.
