Satao Elerai – Location

Satao Elerai is located on the Eastern side of Amboseli National Park in its own private conservancy, Satao Elerai Conservancy, that protects more than 5,000 Acres of natural wildlife area.

The Camp was built to ensure the local Masai community with the economic incentives to set aside their land for wildlife conservation. Whenever guests are staying with us we are indebted to put forward our revenue for the betterment of the Elerai Masai society.

The Satao Elerai Conservancy forms the critical wildlife corridor linking the Kilimanjaro Forest Reserve in Tanzania and the Amboseli National Park.

The Conservancy is a project between the privately and community owned camp, the African Wildlife Foundation and the local Masai Elerai community.

The Conservancy is characterized by a dramatic hilly landscape which is cut through by a 30 meter deep ravine coming down from Mt. Kilimanjaro.

The general elevation of the conservancy is a couple of hundred meters above the Amboseli pan and therefore offers great view to the National Park.

Amboseli National Park is a rather flat, semi arid basin lying below the most famous symbol of Africa, Mt. Kilimanjaro, rising dramatically out of the savannah to 5,895m (19,340 ft).

A large part of the park consists of the alluvial dried-up bed of the seasonal Lake Amboseli, which in the rainy season can transform into a shallow flood. Towards the centre of the park are a series of swamps, fed by the underground rivers running off the mountain.

It is here, closer to the water, that the concentration of wildlife intensifies, from the ever present herds of elephant to the colorful birdlife.

Satao Elerai – Activities

Game drives
We recommend guests to go for game drives within our own conservancy area to ensure the outmost private and exclusive safari experience with an absolute low vehicle density and also in the Amboseli National Park to see the vast herds of elephants. Our guides are all certified Professional Safari Guides with great knowledge about the ecosystem and its rich biodiversity. Guests are able to go for early morning, afternoon and full day game drives.

Night drives
Night game drives offer a whole different atmosphere and feel of the bush. Guests will have a chance to spot civet, serval and genet cats, bush baby, aardwolf and aardvark as we will teach you how to look for these nocturnal species and use the spotlight appropriately.

Game walks
Walking through the African savannah on a foot gives a whole new dimension to game viewing. You are in the nature and come close to the different species of flora and fauna that are part of the Amboseli Ecosystem. Slowly we will try and approach plain game as zebra, impalas or even the great eland and catch a glimpse of a warthog running fast away on it small fat legs. Game walks are arranged within our conservancy area accompanied by two armed Masai guards.

Birding
Over 200 species of birds have been spotted around the premises of our camp. Birds visit our waterhole and small pond and the patient birder can easily watch the weavers build their nests in the acacia trees.

Elerai Masai cultural experience
Satao Elerai invites our guests to meet the people of our conservancy area, the Elerai Masai community. The Elerai Masais are proud to share their knowledge about how to light a fire, how to use local plants for medical purposes and how to survive in the middle of the bush.

Sundowners
One of the most wonderful experiences that takes you back to the early safari days are without any doubt sundowners, relax around the fireplace in the midst of the bush with the moon spreading its cool blue light while you enjoy a good and old fashion gin and tonic.
